Golf irons and wedges have a lot in common and yet there are some distinct differences between the two. Both golf clubs are used for purposes of creating more control over the flight of a golf ball and for hitting it farther. However, the way in which an iron and a wedge accomplish these tasks is different. Knowing the differences between irons and wedges can help golfers make the most of their equipment and become more successful on the course.

What is an Iron?

A golf iron is a club that has a relatively flat face and a long slender shaft. Irons are used when golfers need to hit their shots farther and with more accuracy. They are typically used when golfers are in mid or long-range distances and need to be able to control the shot. Irons generally have higher loft angles than other clubs, although the amount of loft varies depending on the iron. This loft angle allows golfers to create more distance off their shots, while also giving them the control they need to stay straight.

What is a Wedge?

A golf wedge is a club that has a very high loft and a wide sole. Wedges are used to hit golf shots with a high degree of precision and control. They are typically used in more confined areas, such as chipping and pitching, where golfers need to be precise in order to get the ball onto the green. Wedges also have more loft than irons, allowing golfers to hit shots with a lot of spin, which will help them stop the ball quicker and more accurately on the green.

Differences Between Golf Irons and Wedges

The primary difference between golf irons and wedges is the amount of loft each club has. An iron generally has less loft than a wedge, which allows for greater distance when hitting the ball. The higher loft of a wedge allows for greater control, as the spin created by the club will help the ball stop more quickly on the green. In addition, wedges tend to have a wider sole than irons, which allows for a greater accuracy when hitting the ball.

Another difference between the two clubs is their design. Irons have thinner shafts and more flat faces, while wedges have thicker shafts and more rounded faces. This design difference is important when considering the type of shot to make with each club.

Irons are more suitable for long-distance shots, while wedges are better for close-range shots (as chipping and pitching).
