The Ladies Golf Union (LGU) is the governing body for women's golf in Great Britain and Ireland. Founded in 1893, the LGU has a rich history of promoting and supporting the growth of women's golf in these countries. In this article, we will dig into the history, mission, and activities of the LGU, as well as highlight some of its most notable achievements and notable members.

History of the Ladies Golf Union

The LGU was founded in 1893, when a group of women golfers in Scotland decided to form their own organization to govern the sport. At the time, women were not allowed to join most golf clubs, and the few that did allow women members often did not offer the same facilities or opportunities as those for men. The LGU was created to give women the opportunity to play golf on an equal footing with men, and to provide a platform for them to compete and improve their skills.

The LGU's first president was Lady Florence Dixie, a prominent socialite and avid golfer. Lady Dixie was instrumental in the growth of the LGU, and she served as president for the first six years of its existence. The LGU's first major event was the British Ladies Amateur Championship, which was held in 1894. The event was a great success, and it has been held every year since, making it one of the oldest continuously held golf tournaments in the world.

Mission and Activities of the Ladies Golf Union

The LGU's mission is to promote and support the growth of women's golf in Great Britain and Ireland. In addition to these activities, the LGU also works closely with other golf organizations to promote the growth of the sport. This includes partnerships with the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, the European Golf Association, and the Ladies European Tour.
